Central West Short Playwriting Festival 2012-13.

Bathurst Theatre Company and Local Stages BMEC combine to create the inaugural Central West Short Playwriting Festival 2012-13.

Short playwriting and producing short works is a great opportunity to develop skills in any area of theatre within a manageable size and structure. The same skills are used to develop a story or concept in a short work as with a full two act play. This is why we have created the Central West Short Playwriting Festival to further develop these skills and opportunities in the region. Another important component of the festival is to create a strong playwriting network which we aim to do by bringing writers together to share their learning and get to know each other as well as with our facebook site.

This festival comprises three workshops spread throughout the year to develop short plays with the assistance of Rob Reid and Alex Broun – both highly regarded playwrites. To accompany the playwriting workshops, there will also be workshops focusing on Stage and Production Management, Directing and Technical Production to address the need for theatre skills development in the Central West.

It is important to hear plays read aloud whilst they are in development. As such, a crucial part of the writing workshops will be the playreading component at the end of each workshop day with a selection of local actors. There will also be the possibility for completed works to be fully produced at the end of the festival alongside short works by the professional writers. All Stagecraft workshop participants will also have the opportunity to put their skills into action for the production component of the Festival.

BEcky Russell is coordinating this project and she is looking to find out the interest for participation in your area so we can properly plan the location of the workshops happening throughout the year. If you have any questions or suggestions for the Festival or just want to know more, please don’t hesitate to contact Becky at:
